Diploma in Dental Technology

This is a full time three year course in dental technology providing training for those who wish to become dental technicians. Six students will be accepted for the course each year.

Aims
The aims of the course are to:

Educate and train personnel who make up that part of the dental team with which clinicians may relate in the planning, design and fabrication of intra-oral and extra-oral appliances.
Familiarise students with the Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology of the oral cavity and its biological response to appliances, materials and trauma.
Develop understanding and knowledge of the composition of materials used in dental technology together with their physical, chemical and mechanical properties in order that they may be used safely and to the benefit of the public.
Develop planning and communication skills, through learning and experience, so that students will be able to relate to the changing needs of the dental profession.
Curriculum
The course is designed to develop in each student a high level of understanding and technical skill in all the basic disciplines of dental technology; to have an understanding of modern materials science; to train in the technology of accurately casting dental alloys, fabrication of porcelain restorations and the creation of high quality cosmetic artefacts.

Subjects
Year 1 Dental anatomy, physics, chemistry, oral masticatory system, dental technology theory and practice.

Year 2 Business studies, material science, computer studies, dental technology theory and practice.

Year 3 Laboratory production and the completion of a technical project.

Award
Students who successfully complete the course are awarded the Diploma in Dental Technology by the College.

Entry requirements
1. A pass in English, Mathematics, and in four other subjects, one of which must be Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science or Physics/Chemistry.

2. Of the six subjects presented, two must be of a standard of at least Grade C on ordinary Leaving Certificate papers.

3. A pass for requirement 1 above means Grade D or higher on higher and ordinary papers.

NB Agricultural Science and Biology may not be presented together.

Applications
Applications for admission from E.U. applicants to the course should be made to the Central Applications Office (C.A.O.), Tower House, Eglinton Street, Galway. Applicants are referred to the C.A.O. handbook for details of application dates and procedures. Applications for admission from non-E.U. applicants should be made to the Office of International Student Affairs, Trinity College, Dublin 2 by 1st February of the year of proposed entry.
Mature applicants to the course must apply through the CAO and to the Admissions Office, West Theatre, Trinity College, Dublin 2 by 1st February of the year of proposed entry.
Fee
Students who are eligible for the Government Fee Remission Scheme are only required to pay the standard Student Charge when accepting their place. In addition, all students are required to pay a Sports Facilities Levy. Students have to provide their own accommodation.
